(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago alderman who wants to be mayor is calling out the Lightfoot Administration for what he sees as waste.

Ald. Ray Lopez of the 15th Ward is seizing on the mayor’s promise to plant 75,000 trees to improve the city’s urban canopy.

He posted photographs on Twitter of what he says is thousands of trees in a vacant lot in Back of the Yards that have yet to be planted.

“Those trees have been sitting there for months. Most of them, their leaves are falling off already. While it’s great to make a headline that you’re improving the urban canopy and beautifying our city, none of that matters unless you actually do it.”

The city is running out of time and places to plant the trees before frost sets in, Lopez says. He questions whether there are workers to get them in the ground before it’s too late.

Lopez speculates there are other lots storing unplanted trees.

He suggests people call the mayor’s office if they want the trees.

WBBM Newsradio has asked the mayor’s office for comment.
