Lightfoot 'disappointed' with CPS' COVID testing, contact tracing programs

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lightfoot is expressing her disappointment with the COVID testing and contact tracing programs in the public schools.

The CPS testing program, which has been slammed by the Chicago Teachers Union, is not expected to be fully implemented until the end of month - more than a month after the start of classes.

Mayor Lightfoot said on Chicago Tonight, she’s “disappointed in the way this has been rolled out...In anticipation of the opening of school, there should have been a much more robust plan and infrastructure in place.”

The teacher’s union, which has been critical of the testing, contact tracing, safety measures, and the data reported by the district wrote on Facebook, “The mayor finally cops to her incompetence — kind of.”

The union believes safety is lacking and doesn’t trust the CPS numbers.

Since the start of the school year, Chicago Public Schools has reported 481 COVID cases with more than 9,600 people identified as close contacts of an infected person. The district said about 4,000 COVID-19 tests have been administered through CPS’ screening program.
