CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago City Council has passed the city's 2022 recovery budget, which includes the largest city-run monthly cash assistance program in the U.S. for hard hit residents.
The budget includes more than $31 million for a pilot program that sends $500 checks with no strings attached to 5,000 low-income families - a universal basic income every month.
"Now this program is controversial for some, but for me, it just makes plain sense," Lightfoot said. "Of course we need to teach people how to fish, but right now in this moment with so many people suffering in pain and worried about financial ruin, this is what we must to do make sure that these families don't slip into the abyss."
The Mayor is also heralding additional funding to fight homelessness and provide more mental health treatment.
It is, she said, the most progressive city budget ever.
