(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday celebrated her administration’s “Invest South/West” neighborhood redevelopment program as it expands with a third round.

The Friends Band set the tone as Lightfoot celebrated the $1.4 billion in investments for Chicago’s South and West sides over the last two years.

She said every project had direct involvement from community groups and businesses in the communities.

Juan Moreno, the architect on a planned development by Team Pioneros in Humbolt Park, grew emotional as he marveled at the significance.

Other mayors have shown a commitment to African-American and Latino participation. But for the first time, he added, Chicago has a mayor committed to Black and Brown leadership.

Moreno's development is one of three announced in a new round of investments. Two of the new mixed-use developments are in Humbolt Park, the other is in South Shore.
