(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Lightfoot suggested the president of the Chicago Park District Board will make a decision soon about whether she will remain, as pressure mounts for her to resign following the sexual harassment and abuse scandal involving lifeguards at the city's pools and beaches.
When asked about the future of Avis LaVelle, the mayor began with words of praise for her years of public service. She then said LaVelle is nearing a decision about her own future.
Lavelle has said she relied on former-Park District Supt. Mike Kelly to inform her on what was being done about the harassment and abuse complaints from two young women.
The scandal led to Kelly's resignation. Two reports released earlier this week indicated the park district mishandled investigations.
Two of Lightfoot’s closest city council allies, aldermen Scott Waugespack and Michelle Smith, say they don't buy LaVelle's explanation and accuse her of failing to take appropriate action after learning of the accusations.
