(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said there won’t be mass firings for city employees who have not complied with a March 13 deadline to be vaccinated.
On Monday, she said many of the holdouts to entering their vaccination status in the city portal have begun to do so.
Her office released a statement saying 30 police department employees are in a “no pay” status, as well as 19 from the Chicago Fire Department.
Of the 3,154 city workers who have not complied, 2,367 are police personnel, according to data from the city.
Lightfoot said she believes many of the police officers who haven’t shared their information have been vaccinated.
In recent weeks, arbitrators and the courts have reaffirmed the city’s right to require the mandate.
“I don’t want to see anyone separated from the job, but the rules are the rules and the police have to follow them, as does the fire department, the same as any other city employee,” the mayor said.
As for the aldermen who have threatened to call a special city council meeting over the mandate, Lightfoot calls it a stunt.
