BEACH PARK, IL (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Some political leaders want a speed limit change on a portion of Sheridan Road where a young boy was hit by an SUV last week.

Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Chris Covelli said the early indication is that the driver whose SUV hit the young boy and his dog Friday night was not speeding. The speed limit on Sheridan Road through Beach Park is 40 mph.

But, a Beach Park trustee and at least one state lawmaker said that’s too high for the density of the population. Beach Park village administrator Marc Huber told the Lake News-Sun, that between 2014 and 2020, 12 pedestrians and two cyclists had been hit by vehicles, three of them killed.

As for the boy hit Friday, he remains in critical condition at Lurie’s Children Hospital.
