CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - About 200 patient care representatives, ER techs and other workers at Loretto Hospital are on strike today, demanding pay raises after weekend negotiations talks failed to reach an agreement.

Jessita Davis and other Loretto workers were out in purple shirts that read,”‘respect us, pay us, staff us.”  She said she has to work double shifts to make ends meet.

“Go home, take care of my son. Come back to work at 11:30 at night to 7:00 in the morning and still work a regular shift at 7 to 3:30, that ain’t fair,” Davis said.

State Representative Marcus Evans Jr. said Safety-Net Hospital administrators told him they needed money to pay workers during the legislative session in Springfield.

“They got a plan, right, ok fine…Now I’m here after the session is over, after they’ve gotten all the state dollars to cover their salaries, they don’t got enough money for the workers. That’s crazy.

Loretto said in a statement it has offered proposals to address wages, recruitment and retention and calls the union’s demands for first-year pay increase impractical, saying they exceed the hospital’s economic reality.
