Loyola sophomores participate in school tradition that was delayed by COVID-19

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Sophomores at Loyola University took part in a school tradition Sunday morning that was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Walking through the green doors of  Cudahy Library is supposed to mark the beginning and the end of Loyola students' college experience.  But the class of 2024 spent its freshman year online.  So Sunday, second years like Mike Baker of Chicago took the walk.

“Pretty exciting considering how we were at home last semester, at least most of us were. So this is more of a first step toward our adult life, being able to walk through and come back to our four years officially,” Baker told WBBM Newsradio.

Several students told WBBM Newsradio they were excited to do the walk and see their classmates in person.

It came up with the “Second Year Sunday” after hearing from students and their families that they wanted the orientation, convocation and other traditions they missed last year when classes were held virtually.

This year's freshman class walked through the green doors on Friday.
