(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A former Bensenville man is back in custody in DuPage County after he disappeared in connection with a homicide case more than 20 years ago.

Romulo Mendoza, 46, has been on the run from charges that he tried to cover up a February 2000 killing, prosecutors say.

Mendoza allegedly helped a roommate dump the body of a third man who was killed during an argument in their apartment.

He skipped bail three months later, authorities said.

Last month, agents picked him up as he tried to re-enter the U.S. at the southern border, officials said.

Judge Ann Celine O’Hallaren Walsh set Mendoza’s bond at $1 million on Thursday.

“Twenty-two years ago, Romulo Mendoza failed to appear in court on charges he concealed a homicidal death in DuPage County,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “The apprehension of this defendant sends the message that law enforcement in DuPage County will never give up on a case, regardless of how much time may have passed.”

Mendoza is next expected in court Aug. 18.
