(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The man accused of murdering his estranged girlfriend in suburban Barrington appeared in court on Wednesday, and new details about the case have now come to light.

Dr. Olga Duchon, of Vernon Hills, was shot and killed on Sunday inside of 46-year-old William Zientek’s home on the 400 block of West Russell Street.

On Wednesday, Cook County prosecutors said in court that Zientek beat the 42-year-old Duchon with a baseball bat before shooting her. Prosecutors also said the murder happened in front of the couple's 3-year-old daughter.

Responding officers found Duchon unresponsive, prosecutors said. She was laying on her side with a child’s blanket over her.

Court documents said the couple's relationship ended over Duchon's objections to Zientek having a gun. She also had an order of protection against Zientek, which prosecutors said revoked his Firearm Owners Identification card.

Due to the order of protection, Zientek was required to surrender all firearms.

He said the shooting was in self-defense and is due back in court on Dec. 13.
