CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The man accused of shooting and killing University of Chicago graduate student Dennis Zheng this week during a robbery, had his first court appearance Saturday.

An appointed public defender described Alton Spann as a 19-year-old working on high school completion and an active church member.

However, a Cook County circuit court judge- during Spann's bond hearing weighed the aggravated circumstances of the crimes that happened Tuesday leading to the death of Zheng.

The judge determined Spann to be a real and present danger to the community and public safety. He is being held with no bail and faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted. Spann's next court date is set for Nov. 19.
