Man arrested after throwing hot grease at co-worker, hitting another with pot

Deep fryers with hot bubbling boiling oil on restaurant kitchen

SCHERERVILLE, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An Indiana man was arrested Tuesday for burning his female co-worker with hot grease at a pizza restaurant in Schererville, Indiana.

Marquise J.L. Maxwell, 26, of Gary, Indiana, is accused of causing second-degree burns to the woman's head, neck, face, chest, and shoulder that likely will result in permanent scarring. He was taken into custody Tuesday morning on an arrest warrant.

According to Lake Criminal Court records, Maxwell showed up to work on Aug. 1 more than an hour late. He is said to have made a comment about his schedule "not working out for him" and became agitated that another co-worker had been fired.

The female co-worker had only been working at the Schererville Pizza Hut, located at 975 W. Lincoln Highway, for about a week before the incident, she told police.

According to the Northwest Indiana Times, on the day of the incident she told police she could hear Maxwell in the manager's office arguing, and she said something to her 17-year-old son, who also worked at the restaurant. That is when Maxwell started yelling at the woman.

The Pizza Hut manager got between Maxwell and the woman to avoid escalation, and Maxwell left the restaurant.

A short time later, Maxwell returned to the restaurant with his family.

While his family ordered food, court records allege Maxwell went into the kitchen, filled a pot with 350-degree grease from a fryer and threw it at the woman.

Meanwhile, Maxwell's family members began beating the woman's son, and then Maxwell came and hit the 17-year-old boy with the pot before fleeing.

The teen suffered bruising and redness to his head and back.

Both were taken to Franciscan Health hospital in Crown Point for treatment. The mother was later transferred to Loyola University Medical Center for further treatment of her burns.

The Northwest Indiana Times reported Maxwell is charged with five felony counts and one misdemeanor count of battery.
