(WBBM NEWSRADIO) --Cook County prosecutors say a Garfield Park man with a string of prison sentences is responsible for the death of an 8-year-old boy who was shot with a semi-automatic pistol two weeks ago.

Prosecutors told the judge in bond court that 41-year-old Ramon Sumerlin kept a gun hidden under his mattress.

They said early Aug. 15, while Sumerlin was out, his 9-year-old son and an 8-year-old boy were in the care of other adults in the home on West Flournoy.

While others were sleeping, the two boys reportedly tried to find a TV remote and found Sumerlin's Glock 19 handgun.

Prosecutors say the 9-year-old tried to take the gun away from 8-year-old Jacari Brown, but Jacari was shot and killed.

The state's attorney says Sumerlin has a record of prison sentences, mostly for possession of a controlled substance. Most recently, he was on probation for a 2021 weapons charge.

Sumerlin faces child-endangerment and weapon charges. His bond was set at $10,000, meaning he would need to post $1,000 to be released.
