A Chicago man with an extensive criminal background has been charged in the shooting death of Detective Allen Reddins.

The village of Oak Park says 37-year-old Jerrell Thomas has been charged by the Cook County State's Attorney's office with several crimes, including first degree murder.

Reddins was shot after responding to a call of a person observed with a gun leaving the Chase Bank on Lake Street near Scoville Park.

The village of Oak Park said Reddins was shot around 9:30 a.m.. He died at Loyola Medical Center.

Officer Reddins was 40 years old. He was sworn into the Oak Park Police Department in May 2019.

Officials said Reddins' death was the department's first line-of-duty death since 1938.

Thomas is considered a habitual criminal with a previous history of multiple arrests for aggravated battery to a police officer, domestic battery battery and resisting a police officer.

Thomas was injured in the incident and remains hospitalized, so no bond hearing has been set.
