South Side man charged with trying to kidnap, stab firefighters

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A 47-year-old-man is now facing multiple charges for allegedly trying to capture two Chicago firefighters in a South Side basement.

Melvin Jordan is now charged with two counts each of First Degree Attempted Murder, Aggravated Armed Kidnapping, Aggravated Unlawful Restraint, and one count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon by a felon in connection with the incident that happened Tuesday afternoon at 77th and Marshfield.

Jordan is accused of luring two firefighters into the basement of a home on a report of a phony gas leak.  Once inside, he threatened the battalion chief and lieutenant with a knife and ordered them to stay in a basement, where the floor was covered in gasoline.

The firefighters managed to escape unharmed.
