(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A DuPage County judge has denied pretrial release for a man who allegedly killed his wife over the weekend by stabbing her dozens of times at her apartment.

Baltazar Perez-Estrada, 33, entered the Carol Stream Police Department Monday morning and told authorities he had stabbed his wife, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Detectives determined that Perez-Estrada got into an argument Sunday night with his wife, 26-year-old Maricela Simon Franco, before he stabbed her “dozens of times about her head, neck, body and hands, nearly decapitating her head,” authorities said.

Franco was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple have two minor children, both of whom were present at the time of the killing, officials said.

Perez-Estrada was charged with five counts of first-degree murder and on Thursday was denied pretrial release.

“The extremely violent end to a young mother’s life is something that should touch us all. Domestic violence continues to be a scourge on society, claiming more than ten million victims a year in some form or fashion,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a prepared statement.

DuPage County authorities also said Perez-Estrada was here illegally after arriving from Mexico around two weeks ago.
