(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Gary, Indiana police have arrested a Munster man for allegedly torturing an animal and recording his actions.

Nikola Kutansky, 35, faces a felony charge of knowingly torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal.

Indiana Conservation Officer Alex Neel wouldn’t divulge many details but said Kutansky is accused of attacking a sheep and at least two chickens.

“The sheep did have its throat cut open with a knife while it was still alive,” he said Tuesday.

Officers found video of the attack on Kutanksy’s phone, Neel said.

“Torturing of animals can be a stepping stone for certain people,” he said, referring to a criminology theory that acts of cruelty can progress to violent acts against people.

Neel added he can’t say that is the case with Kutansky.

Conservation officers believe Kutansky stole the animals from the working farm at Buckley Homestead Park in Lowell.

He has been under investigation for three years and was charged in November with stealing stuffed and mounted animals and ammunition from the office of a state wildlife area.
