LaSalle County manhunt ends with double-homicide suspect in custody

LASALLE Co. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A 37-year-old double-homicide suspect was arrested Wednesday morning following a manhunt in rural LaSalle County.

The LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton said around 10 p.m. a woman called 911, reporting that a man was banging on the door of her home in Sheridan, and then she said he had shot out the windows.

"The suspect was her ex-husband. Officers began a search of the area," he said.

According to police, the victim attempted to call her parents and got no answer. She then called the neighbor of her parents to check their welfare. The neighbor went to the residence, "and it was there through a window, the victim's mother on the floor bleeding," Sheriff Templeton said. The neighbor called the victim and told her what he had seen. At the parent's residence, deputies made entry and found both parents of the victim had been shot.

Both were deceased, Sheriff Templeton said.

Gregory Barnes Sr. and Brenda Barnes were both 62.

About eight hours later, the suspect, 37-year-old Donald Fredres, of Sandwich, was found in a cornfield and was arrested without incident.

His ex-wife was treated for cuts from flying glass from her windows being shot out.

Templeton was unable to provide details about a possible motive. No charges have been filed against the man.
