MATTESON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Cleanup is underway after a freight train derailment in Matteson more than a week ago.
Matteson Fire Chief Michael Bacon said there are still several cars remaining in the yard.
“They all have been purged without any issue, with no offsite impacts of the air quality, which is still being monitored by the EPA [Environmental Protection Agency],” Bacon said. “The cars that are onsite are projected to be sheared removed starting next week.”
Bacon said the village is working with crews from Canadian National Railway Company to repair some damages done to the surrounding roadway and expects work to be completed by July 30.
He added that the village is going to take advantage of additional training being offered by CN Rail at their headquarters in the event this does happen again.
The Federal Railroad Administration's investigation into the cause of the derailment is still ongoing.
