(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago's famous Maxwell Street Market can be found this summer on Maxwell Street.

The City says the Market will return to its original home on "Maxwell Street" on the West Side, thirty years after it began moving around the City to accommodate expansion of UIC.

“We are looking for about 35 vendors each month. So, the market will be a monthly market on the last Sunday of each month, where people can come out, sell their items, sell the things that they, you know, are interesting and unique and looking for a great audience to come down and check those things out,” Neal Heitz, the Director of Event Production at the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, said.

Vendor applications are available here.

The original Maxwell Street Market was centered at Maxwell and Halsted Streets. This year’s market will be found at Maxwell Street between South Halsted Street and South Union Avenue and on South Union Avenue between West Rochford and West Liberty streets.

It began as an open-air market established in the late 19th century and later became known as a place where many Black musicians who had migrated to Chicago began to develop the "Chicago Blues" style of music.

“We intend for the Maxwell Street Market to further enhance this already-bustling neighborhood, which features several public artworks honoring the market’s past,” said DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth in a released statement.

“We and our community partners including the University of Illinois Chicago are thrilled to welcome new and returning visitors to the area with an exciting lineup of vendors and entertainment that celebrates the important legacy of the market while reflecting the diversity of the city itself.”

The Maxwell Street Market will be open for six market days on the last Sunday of each month beginning May 26, through October.

Parking is available nearby and public transit options include the Blue Line’s via the Halsted Street station, the #8 Halsted Street bus, and the #12 Roosevelt Street bus.
