CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Mayor Brandon Johnson held the first in a series of budget engagement roundtables Tuesday night as his administration seeks input from citizens about priorities.

The mayor told those in attendance at Malcolm X College he wants to "build a better, stronger, safer Chicago," repeating the theme of his campaign.

"A budget plan is more than just dollar amounts. A budget is about our values. I believe in investing in people and protecting and supporting working families and individuals," Johnson said.

"I believe in meeting our obligations to every taxpayer, to retirees and of course to residents of this great city. I can tell you what I don't believe. I don't believe in balancing a budget on the backs of working Chicagoans," Johnson said.

There will be two more budget engagement meetings this week, at Kennedy-King College and Truman College ahead of a youth budget roundtable next Tuesday evening at the Harold Washington Library.
