(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson is reacting strongly to suggestions that the public has not heard enough from him about the current wave of violence across the City.

Mayor Johnson was in Lawndale, announcing an expansion of the fund to aid the victims of violent crime, and he bristled when he was asked why he hadn't said more, before now, about the wave of shootings and murders last weekend.

The Mayor says what people have seen and heard from him is action.

“The people of Chicago want action. We’ve been hearing words from administrations for so damn long in this city without action. People are tired of it,” he said.

“So we invest in people. The people deserve more than just words.”

He said what people have heard from him has been action, including $100-million for violence prevention, and more than a billion-dollar bond issue for housing and economic development. He said they are getting results.

The problem, Johnson said, is that some previous mayors have been quick to make strong statements in the wake of violent weekends, but have done little to address the problems.
