(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Following what Colorado Gov. Jared Polis called a “very productive conversation” with Mayor Lori Lightfoot and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Polis said Colorado is done busing migrants to those cities.

In a press release, Polis said his state is scaling back transportation of migrants to their desired final destination now that weather and holiday travel has normalized.

Lightfoot and Adams called for the practice to stop and said they directly told a Colorado official that neither city had room for more migrants before the state bused hundreds to them “because of the thousands of migrants that had already been inhumanely bused to our respective cities from Texas since spring of 2022.”

“Since December of 2022, Chicago and New York City have received hundreds of individuals from Colorado,” the two mayors wrote in a letter.

Adams and Lightfoot said they share concerns about accommodating the flood of asylum seekers but argued that overburdening other cities isn’t the solution.

Although Polis agreed to not to send any more buses to Chicago and New York City, he added that he’ll refuse to keep people against their will if they’d to travel elsewhere.

“People fleeing violence and oppression in search of a better life for themselves and their families deserve our respect, not political games, and we are grateful we have been able to assist migrants to reach their final destination,” he said in the press release.
