MILWAUKEE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The city of Milwaukee is taking a new approach to combat reckless driving: civil lawsuits against the worst offenders.
The first driver to face a civil suit had had 44 traffic citations in five years and fourteen in 2022 alone including Driving under the influence, reckless driving, speeding, running red lights, driving on a suspended license.
The city considers 53-year-old Anthony Szablewski a “public nuisance.”
Jordan Morales, an activist with a neighborhood association who has focused on reckless driving, spoke to CBS 58 Milwaukee.
"I'm very happy to see them getting on board with this important tool the police now have."
The man who the city is suing could have his car impounded- similar to how homes can be taken if they’re used for criminal activity and are considered a public nuisance.
Jail time is also possible. Milwaukee police say there are twenty others that are being put on notice. They could be next.
