CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --A new hockey season is underway, and the "future of hockey" is on the ice this weekend across the Chicago area.
The "Try Hockey For Free" weekend was sponsored by the Blackhawks with more than 1,000 kids participating at 15 rinks, including Fifth Third Arena on the West Side.
Julie Webb was there with her son and daughter, who seemed to be having a good time. "We've skated and played pond hockey, but this is the first sticks on the ice activity," she said.
Children participating were awarded a free Blackhawks jersey, Connor Bedard t-shirt, hockey stick, and other equipment and most importantly time on the ice.
Ethan Wautelet had a spot near the glass at Fifth Third Arena. He brought his 4-year-old daughter, who was inspired by her older sister to try hockey.
"Little sister want to do what big sister does, so she was super excited to be able to take part."
The event also included kid-friendly interactive activities on how to become a coach, referee, team mascot, broadcaster, and more ways to be involved in hockey.
