CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Mount Prospect Police Department has begun selling its decommissioned police patches to raise money for the families of first responders killed in the line of duty.

The patches drew criticism over the “Thin Blue Line” imagery, which some residents argued had been adopted by extremist groups.

Village Trustee Peggy Pissarreck told the Daily Herald she supports turning a negative into a positive, but criticized the police department’s Facebook post, which said they were ordered to decommission the patch.

She said the Board of Trustees voted 4-3 to recommend the removal in August.

The patches are being sold at the front desk of police headquarters for $10 dollars or $15 for an honor guard version.

Money raised will then be donated to the 100 Club of Illinois.
