CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced several road projects totaling $27 million for southern Cook County.
The six road projects will cost $27 million, with $14 million coming from Gov. JB Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program, and will extend into 2022, according to IDOT.
“With the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, we are restoring and transforming Illinois’s aging infrastructure,” said Governor Pritzker, in a statement. “Rebuild Illinois is not only about investing in infrastructure, but about investing in people and communities, as well. In the coming months, IDOT will undertake projects that will ultimately create safer roads and bridges and provide jobs in southern Cook County and across the entire state.”
The projects include repaving Harlem Avenue between 111th and 159th Streets, along with new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, and resurfacing Illinois 394 from just north of 186th Street to south of Joe Orr Road. Plus, a deck replacement project on the bridge carrying Steger Road over I-57 scheduled to begin this summer and completed this fall.
Additionally, Dixie Highway will be resurfaced between Chicago Road and 183rd Street. Work already started and should end in late fall. And, Glenwood-Dyer Road is going to be widened between Stony Island and Torrence, to accommodate a two-way left-turn lane. The project is scheduled to begin this summer and completed next fall.
Then this fall, work is scheduled to replace the bridge on 127th Street at Tinley Creek, Cal-Sag Road. That project is expected to take a year.
“These projects represent a significant investment in southern Cook County and are a big step forward in our work to improve safety, mobility and create economic opportunity for years to come,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “We’re asking drivers to be patient, slow down and pay extra attention driving in and around any work zone.”
