MUNDELEIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Students at Mundelein High School were locked out Wednesday morning after trying to attend classes without masks.
Students organized a planned protest by sending out a text that read, in part, “It is now our time to show Mundelein we are serious about this topic and are done wearing our masks. We ask that students who are serious about this topic, gather in front of the school. We will then walk in with no masks on.”
The plan was to gather outside the school Wednesday morning and walk in together without masks. They were met with refused entry by administration, CBS 2 reported during a live-steam.
Students said they were told no masks, no entry. About two dozen students stood in solidarity outside the school.
"We are locked out of the school until we put a mask on," one student told a CBS 2 reporter.
Reporter: So what are you going to do?
"We are going to stand out here and demand change. We don't want to have to go to school with a mask on," the student said.
Another student said, "We are done with the masks. We don't want to wear it. Most of the other schools in our area said 'no' and we're stuck with it. We want it to be optional," said one student apart of the protest. "We want to give people a chance. If they want to wear it, they can wear it.
"We are not allowed in until we have a mask on. We are currently locked out."
Students were then heard cheering, as supporters in passing cars acknowledged them.
