'I don't co-parent with D-300': Mask-optional debate causes abrupt end to school board meeting

ALGONQUIN, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A number of parents around the Chicago area continue to express outrage that their children are still required to wear masks in school. The latest eruption happened Tuesday night in the northwest suburbs.

Parents chanted, shouted, and held signs outside the offices of Algonquin Community Unit School District 300. One even asked motorists to honk if they support going mask-optional in schools.

"I don’t co-parent with D-300. It’s my children. They’re my responsibility," district parent Shelly Haley told CBS 2.

“We are out here now to get the masks off,” added district parent Christine Zdybel.

Then, at the school board meeting Tuesday night, a number of parents did not hold back their rage. In fact, one parent was escorted out of the meeting, and after a while, the school board president adjourned the meeting, saying it was no longer peaceful.

"I’m kind of disappointed, though, that adults are acting the way they’re acting. I think it’s just sad ‘cause our kids are watching," parent Tola Makinde told CBS 2.

After all that, the Algonquin District 300 school board never did vote on changing the mask policy, so students are still required to wear them.
