NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Naperville City Council voted early Wednesday morning to ban the sale of assault weapons.
It was a marathon meeting with an overflow crowd with more than 100 signed up to speak on both sides of the issue.
“Your political theater is more important to you than shutting down my family-owned business. Well, you’re going to steal the job away from those employees that work there. That is wrong, do the right thing, you have the power to do it,” said Robert Bevis the the owner of Law Weapons and Supply, one of the two shops impacted.
Residents of Naperville and other communities lined up to weigh in.
“But, if there’s a business in this community that is selling products that endanger our children, we should not be upset if you lose that business. We don’t wring our hands if we find a way to get a meth dealer out of our neighborhood,” said a resident in favor of the ban.
“I don’t think you have any business telling any private organization what they can sell. You don’t go to the candle shop and tell them they can’t sell strawberry scented candles,” said resident who was against the ban.
In the end, after more than five-and-a-half hours, the council voted eight-to-one to pass the ban.
