NAPERVILLE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Naperville gun shop owner has filed a lawsuit over the ban on the sale of assault weapons passed by the city council last month and set to go into effect the first of the year.
Robert Bevis, owner of Law Weapons and Supply, and the National Association for Gun Rights, are suing in federal court, seeking to have the ban declared unconstitutional.
On the day the council approved the ban, Beveis said it would put him out of business.
"Here's why," he explained. "If you just take away the AR- 15-the AR15 is the most popular rifle there is. A lot of people like it. It's like telling McDonald's that they cannot sell hamburger meat anymore in their store, but go ahead and sell anything else you want."
The lawsuit stated “The city’s regulation is not consistent with the nation’s history and tradition of firearm regulation.”
The city anticipated the lawsuit.
