NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Naperville leaders have until today to start negotiating an end to the suburb’s ban on assault weapons sales.
If not, one business owner is ready to take his legal fight as far as it will go.
Robert Bevis owns Law Weapons and Supply on North Aurora Ave.
He estimates his business losses at more than $500,000 since the city enacted an ordinance banning the sale of certain assault-style weapons.
Last week, Bevis told city council members he won’t stop until the ordinance is defeated and the cost and damages are paid in full.
“I encourage the council to immediately act to stop any further enforcement of this ordinance and begin negotiations to resolve the remaining self-inflicted damage that has been caused for the denial of Law Weapons' civil rights, the financial loss and hardship we’ve endured.”
Bevis’ efforts are backed by the National Federation for Gun Rights.
Last month a federal appeals court denied his request to put a hold on the ban while court challenges proceed.
Bevis now plans to take his legal challenge to the U.S. Supreme Court if the city is unwilling to negotiate.
Naperville leaders haven’t commented on the offer, but said they anticipated there would be legal challenges to the ordinance.
