NAPERVILLE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Naperville School District 203 is planning to do away with snow days, because of the ability to now do e-learning; but will let the public weigh in first.
According to Naperville School District 203 Superintendent Dan Bridges, typically the district plans on the possibility of up to five emergency days in a school year, which would then have to be made up at the end of the school year; but that is no longer necessary thanks to e-learning.
Naperville School District 203 Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Jayne Willard laid the groundwork during a board meeting.
"School districts statewide have the ability to utilize e-learning days in lieu of emergency days on the ISBE-approved school calendar. Naperville 203 strives to provide innovative educational opportunities for students and will leverage the use of e-learning days instead of traditional emergency school closing days for bad weather or emergency circumstances," she said.
Naperville was already planning to replace snow days with e-learning days last year, and then the pandemic forced e-learning. So, Willard said, the district is prepared now.
"An e-learning day is now considered a day of attendance and will not require us to extend the school year after the tentative last day of school, if we choose to implement an e-learning day," Willard said. "It provides a consistent end to the date of the school year for students, families, and staff. It streamlines instructional days with fewer interruptions due to days off for snow or other weather."
There will be a public hearing on this proposal at the Aug. 2 school board meeting, before it is sent to the DuPage County Regional Office of Education for approval.
