(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Naperville Police say they had nearly "perfect timing" in receiving some new equipment.
Commander Jason Stubler tells WBBM their patrol cars were equipped with Automated External Defibrillators just this spring, and then earlier this month an officer used the AED to save the life of a driver who had gone into cardiac arrest.
An officer noticed a driver traveling erratically, driving below the speed limit before speeding up and ultimately hitting a parked taco trailer.
The driver reportedly exited the vehicle and then collapsed. He was unconscious and not breathing.
“She opened up the bag and the AED right there immediately. Done it as we do with our training,” Stubler said.
“We do emergency medical training annually and we do our CPR and AED every other year. So we do our, we follow our state mandates and are backed up with our training and she did not hesitate to do it and neither did the initial investigating officer.”
Naperville Police say the person who was saved was quickly talking and joking with medical staff at the hospital.
