(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Shane van Gisbergen is the winner of the NASCAR Cup Series race in Chicago that was delayed and then shortened Sunday because of continuous weekend rain.

It was the NASCAR series debut for van Gisbergen, a Supercars champ from New Zealand.

The Grant Park 220 was originally scheduled to be 100 laps, but officials reduced the number to 75 laps because racers got a late, 5:30 p.m. start and daylight was waning.

Continuous storms partly scuttled the weekend's earlier race event.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race started Saturday but was suspended after 25 laps because of a lightning strike in the area. NASCAR had planned to resume it Sunday morning, but those plans changed because of heavy rainfall and the scheduled Cup Series race.

Cole Custer was declared the winner based on the laps that had been run.

Many fans were understanding about the weather issues and said they had fun soaking up the racetrack atmosphere in an unusual urban setting.
