(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – You’re always told, “Don’t leave home without your umbrella.”

Unless, of course, you’re a NASCAR fan, because umbrellas are not allowed in the cordoned-off race course area.

Many fans approaching the north entrance of the NASCAR Street Race at Columbus and Monroe on Sunday were surprised as they were told about the umbrella ban.

Some fans dashed over the Millennium Park to stash their umbrellas away – under bushes or concrete barriers -- with the hope that they will still be there after Sunday race.

It’s not unreasonable to think some Chicagoans will make some interesting discoveries on Monday.

NASCAR was forced to shorten one of this weekend's races and the second was expected to begin Sunday afternoon. Fifty thousand fans were expected for the event, but clearly attendance fell short of expectations.
