(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Dozens of sailors from all over the nation will make their way to Chicago and its surrounding communities this week for Navy Week, during which the sailors will volunteer and explain what serving the country on the open sea entails.
Ensign Jordyn Diomede, from the Navy Office of Community Outreach, said this week is meant to bring the Navy to places that don’t have a big naval presence.
“We’re here to inform, educate and inspire,” Diomede said. “That’s why we come here. We want the American people to know who their Navy is and what we’re doing. We are worldwide and world-class, so we just want to show the people of Chicago what the Navy is doing across the world.”
This will be the fifth Navy Week hosted in Chicago and its surrounding communities. The program last visited Chicago in 2012.
Officials said some of the Navy assets expected to participate in Chicago's Navy Week include: the USS Illinois, the USS Hyman G. Rickover and the USS Constitution.
Navy Week will take place just days before the Chicago Air and Water is scheduled to begin. The 2024 Air and Water Show is headlined by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels.
