(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Residents at senior living communities are relieved as coronavirus restrictions continue to ease. It’s a big contrast to what they’ve been used to for the past 15 months.

“You couldn’t see your friends or talk to them, except on the phone, and then our meals were delivered to our rooms,” said 92-year-old Lenore Maglin, a resident of Belmont Village Senior Living Geneva Road.

She said she got sick of seeing Styrofoam containers.

“If I see another Styrofoam thing, I think I will scream,” Maglin said.

Mercedes Kerr, President of Belmont Village Senior Living, said they tried to make the best of a bad situation.

“We found ways to remain engaged, but they were still very socially distanced and in small groups of people,” Kerr said. Now, she said, "It feels like a new day."

Senior living facilities are starting to bring back a sense of normalcy through group meals, senior programs and in-person visitations.

“It’s very nice to be able to welcome friends and family back into our communities,” she said.

Maglin agrees things have definitely changed for the better.

“When we finally were able to go to the dining room it was like a new existence,” she said.
