CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Workers at the Newberry Library have agreed on their first union contract.

A year after forming their own union, more than 60 workers at the Chicago library have ratified a new contract. It includes a 15% pay raise, a ratification bonus, a doubling of parental leave and freezing of healthcare costs.

Workers said most importantly the deal ensures fair treatment, respect and greater transparency.

“No longer can management make unilateral changes without employee input,” the union said in a statement.

The independent research library opened in 1887.
