NORRIDGE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A suburban High School reunion that wasn’t to be has turned into something special for those who couldn’t attend.
It was supposed to be a big reunion for the class of 1970 at Ridgewood High School in Norridge last year. However, the pandemic disrupted plans so class members decided to try again this year, which was also a fail.
About 160 people were going to attend the reunion, according to Lee Fanslow, chairman of the reunion committee.
"Overwhelmingly, a proportion of our class which was due a refund decided to give towards the Helping Hands program," she said.
The Helping Hands program is run by the school, where, Fanslow said 32 percent of the students are living below the poverty level.
The class of 1970 is donating $10,000 dollars.
"The teacher saw one kid walking in sub zero weather with no coat, no boots, no hats, no nothing and that's how it started," said Fanslow.
Fanslow said the graduates of 1970 are all very proud of their class.
