LINCOLNSHIRE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - North Shore Congressman Brad Schneider said after a July 4th that saw about five mass shootings across the country, it’s time to take major steps against gun violence.

10th District Congressman Brad Schneider said he usually marches in five parades on Independence Day weekend and Highland Parks was going to be one of them. Schneider had just arrived at the Highland Park Independence Day Parade when the gunfire erupted. His staff warned him to stay away, though he tried to help some people on the periphery.

Such attacks are a uniquely American phenomenon, he said.

“The issue is access to guns and failure to address the people who are threats to themselves and the community,” Schneider claimed.

He’s still pushing for universal background checks and an assault weapons ban.

“I’m committed to getting it done and I recognize that what we are seeing across the country, that time is lives, people are dying, people are dying in mass shootings, but they’re also dying in shootings in the streets, in gang shootings, in suicides,” said Schneider.

The 10th District Democrat believes the Safe Communities Bill passed by Congress is good, but not enough.

“Everything we do that’s a positive step forward is going to make a difference, and there’s no one thing we can do that will solve this problem completely, so we have to do everything we can,” Schneider said.
