(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Northwest Indiana county sheriff appeared in court Monday on the other side of the law.
Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr., pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving, for driving more than 40 miles per hour over the posted speed limit back in 2021.
He was observed by Crown Point police driving close to 90 in a 45 zone. The sentence was 60 days of informal probation.
In court, he apologized and said that the people in his community expect better of him.
Since Martinez has served in his community for more than 30 years, prosecutors agreed to drop a felony charge of resisting law enforcement, in exchange for this plea.
Defense attorney Paul Stracci said he agreed the plea was fair, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana.
"We are pleased with the outcome of Sheriff Martinez's case and believe it is appropriate resolution," defense attorneys Stracci, J. Michael Woods and Maryam Afshar-Stewart said in a statement.
