(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Graduate student workers at Northwestern University have overwhelmingly voted to form a union.
The Northwestern University Graduate Workers voted 1,644-114 in favor of creating a bargaining unit. They will be represented by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America.
The union will negotiate on behalf of thousands of graduate students working at Northwestern's Evanston and Chicago campuses as teaching and research assistants as well as fellows.
The graduate workers want higher pay, better healthcare and more support for international students among other goals.
In a statement, Northwestern Provost Kathleen Hagerty said the university looks forward to beginning the process of negotiating a collective bargaining agreement.
