(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nurses at Amita St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet say they are owed thousands of dollars in back pay following a ransomware attack on their payroll timekeeping system.
The Illinois Nurses Association said the ransomware attack on the Kronos payroll system happened shortly before Christmas.
While the issue was repaired last week, the nurses said they are owed thousands of dollars in back pay stemming from the outage.
At one point, the INA said the hospital owed 417 nurses $650,000. While that number has gone down, John Fitzgerald with the INA said the hospital needs to straighten out benefits, such as paid time off, owed to nurses.
He said some nurses who were on leave were not paid at all.
"Other nurses are saying that their accrual of their paid time off is off and reduced. They're having their vacation time stolen from them," Fitzgerald said.
He added that the payroll issues are just another source of stress for nurses who are already overworked due to the COVID pandemic.
