(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The National Weather Service has teams out assessing storm damage in the suburbs and Northwest Indiana today, attempting to determine the number and strength of possible tornadoes.

National Weather Service Senior Meteorologist Jake Petr said there are three teams out assessing damage.

“We send usually two people together in one team where they’re looking, first, for any potential damage, and, once they find that, the next step is assessing what caused it. Was it straight line winds? Or, are there signs of unusual direction that could lead to it being potentially tornado-related,” Petr said.

Petr said there were three tornados on the same exact day last year, Feb. 27, 2023.

Before Tuesday, there had been just eleven confirmed tornadoes in Illinois in the month of February since 1950.

The NWS confirmed strong to severe thunderstorms hit areas north of I-80 Tuesday night, and large hail was reported in the west and southwest suburbs, along the I-88/I-80 corridors.
