CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - An off-duty Chicago Police officer shot and killed a pit bull that attacked her dog on the South Side Sunday morning.

The 30-year-old officer was walking her dog near 29th and Normal in the Bridgeport neighborhood. That's when an unleashed pit bull came up to them from a neighbor's yard.

Police said the pit bull started to bite the dog's neck, and both the officer and the pit bull's owner couldn't separate the dogs.

The off-duty officer then pulled out her gun and shot the pit bull who later died.

Its remains were given to the owner, and no citations were issued.
