(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – South Side Ald. William Hall says all five teenagers injured early Tuesday are expected to recover after the stolen car they were in crashed into a fire hydrant in Englewood.
Police say that after the crash they found a weapon at the scene.
The teenagers who were injured: four girls and a boy. None of legal driving age. All either 13 or 14.
What are kids doing out at 3:00 o'clock in the morning in a stolen car?
Hall, who represents the 6th Ward, blames social media.
"TikTok did not make these children do it, but they did influence these children."
The alderman says the kids are "being raised by cell phones instead of parents."
"Will we say that social media made them do it? No. But what we can say is that the images and videos are influencing our young people, which is leading to these joy rides in the wee hours of the night to wreak havoc."
He said he does not personally know the families but does know his community.
"When we look at the conditions in which poverty has simply destroyed and flatlined neighborhoods and communities, this is what comes with it,” he said. “You have parents working two to three jobs just to make ends meet."
