(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The CIA — yes, that CIA — wants to give one Chicago Public Schools teacher $30,000 to help inspire the next generation of STEM and STEAM professionals.
The goal of the CIA's competition is to get students interested in the fields science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
Shane Tilley, with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), is the project manager. He said the agency’s motivation is simple.
“Engineers, the science, the technology careers — those are in big demand,” he said. “Especially moving forward, and especially in our government entities, they're looking for this next generation of employees for the future.”
Tilley said the winning educator will get to order almost anything they want in the field of makerspace items, as long as it promotes their particular situation best.
“Some of our past winners have purchased 3D printers, computers, [and] coding robots,” he said.
Tilley said any CPS teacher can apply via the ORISE website.
“All an educator has to do is educate someone in 3rd through 12th grade, and they submit a 3-4 minute video illustrating how they would use the makerspace equipment,” he said.
The deadline to apply is March 10. ORISE will surprise the winning teacher in April.
All of the equipment will be delivered in time for the start of the 2023-24 school year.
