(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ten years after "Dry January" started in the UK, the owner of a dry bar in West Town says non-alcoholic drinks have become more popular.
Cristina Torres, owner of Bendición Dry Bar, said she started her journey to sobriety in February 2020 after an unsuccessful Dry January attempt made her take a deeper look into her relationship with alcohol.
"It kind of just like stayed in the back of my head,” she explains. “Like every time I reached for a drink, it didn't feel right anymore.”
She says Dry January is almost like a preview of what a sober life can be.
"It doesn't have to be a full commitment, it doesn't have to be a forever thing. It's kind of just you just try it and see and maybe you like it, maybe you don't, and there's nothing wrong with just trying it out."
Torres said she's glad that not drinking has become more normalized and that there's less judgment around a sober lifestyle.
"I think it's really nice that it's growing in popularity and that people are, at least for 30 days, if not for longer, just taking a step back and just re-examining their habits around drinking.”
